Driver monitoring has traditionally focused heavily on where the driver is looking. But understanding visual attention is only part of understanding what a driver is doing, and what they intend to do next.
On September 23, Agnes Jernström, Senior Software Engineer at Neonode, will go on stage to present how combining eye-tracking with hand-tracking can give Driver Monitoring Systems a richer understanding of driver and passenger behavior.
By analysing where hands are positioned, how they move and how occupants interact with objects and vehicle controls, hand-tracking can add valuable context to gaze information. A driver looking away from the road while interacting with the infotainment system, for example, represents a different situation from a driver repeatedly focusing on an object held in their hand.
This additional context can help vehicles distinguish between different types of distraction, support more appropriate warning strategies and enable new in-cabin experiences as assisted driving and AI-powered vehicle interfaces continue to evolve.
